In 2011, the Nature Explore design team collaborated with Gomez Heritage Elementary to create a distinctive outdoor classroom honoring the memory of beloved staff member Janette Gilbert. Rooted in her passion for the outdoors, the space was envisioned as a place where children could learn, create, and connect with nature in meaningful ways.

Inspired by a farmstead theme, the design incorporates historic and reclaimed materials that celebrate community heritage. An 1800s barn door serves as a backdrop for performances and gatherings, while fencing crafted from wood reclaimed from the school principal’s family barn reinforces the sense of place. Painted benches – created in collaboration between art teachers and students – add color, creativity, and personal storytelling throughout the space.

More than an outdoor learning environment, the Janette Gilbert Memorial Outdoor Classroom stands as a living tribute and a gathering place for students, staff, and families. Sustained through ongoing volunteer support, it continues to grow and evolve, offering generations of learners a dynamic space for exploration, connection, and reflection.
