In 2014, the Nature Explore design team partnered with the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) to transform a one-acre wooded site into a nature-rich outdoor classroom designed to meet the diverse needs of its students. What was once a challenging landscape—with a deep run-off gully, patchy turf, and aging play equipment—was reimagined into a calming, inclusive environment that supports learning, movement, and reflection.

Working closely with a team of specialists, including a Special Education Teacher, Behavior Specialist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and School Administrator, the design was developed through a two-day on-site workshop and brought to life by J. Ratto Landscaping Ltd. later that fall.

Key features include a dry rock riverbed formed from the original gully, a walking labyrinth to promote self-regulation, raised garden beds, and an orchard of fruit trees. Each element invites sensory exploration, hands-on learning, and seasonal engagement. Contributions from Eagle Scouts, corporate volunteers, and families further strengthened the sense of ownership and community pride.

Since opening, the outdoor classroom has become a beloved extension of the school—an ever-evolving space where students, families, and educators come together to learn, grow, and connect with nature.
