In 2011, our team designed an outdoor classroom for Alexander Elementary School, transforming a natural park-like site of mature trees, open fields, and a small creek into a dynamic learning environment. The design emphasized hands-on exploration, physical activity, and environmental education, with clearly defined learning zones created through grading, landscaping, and natural circulation patterns.

The site was constructed in 2013 with strong community involvement. Volunteers, students, and local organizations contributed to features such as a butterfly garden, etched patios, and student-made stepping stones, all of which personalized the classroom and celebrated local creativity.

Native plantings, shade trees, and wildlife-friendly landscapes ensure long-term educational and ecological value, while simple maintenance strategies – such as deep mulch and durable materials – support sustainable upkeep. The completed classroom provides flexible, inspiring outdoor learning spaces that continue to serve students and educators across the district.
