A Root System of Leaders

by Heather Fox, Education Specialist Nature Explore/Dimensions Educational Research Foundation

What a thrilling week! Surrounded by the wonders of nature at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center in Nebraska City, NE, a motivated group of educators, designers, contractors and advocates came together during the first Nature Explore/Outdoor Classroom Project Leadership Institute to learn from each other and enhance our shared mission of connecting children with nature. I saw first-hand how engaged participants, presenters, hosts and staff members united together and seemed to grow right before my eyes. The result; a cohesive group, building a root system to support stronger connections to nature.

Hear what some members of the group had to say about their time in nature at the Leadership Institute:

The in-depth information and research received will be a great support in my work. Most importantly, my spirit was lifted through the connections I made with fabulous people who are drawn to the mission of sharing nature with others.

-Vicki Ehlers, Early Childhood Specialist/Instructor Oklahoma State University

“I was motivated by the drum circle and Michael Fitzsimmons’s music. It united our experiences and helped to tell our shared story. I am committed to keeping the beat.”

-Julie Halverson-Godson Director of Development at the Child Education Center in La Canada, CA

“Being here is like being recharged. Instead of just one soft voice in our community we have become a louder voice, a collective. Making sure the children are heard”

-Johanna Booth-Miner Director of Live and Learn Early Learning Center in Lee New Hampshire
